- Technology provides tools to outside developers so they can link their own software applications nu
- FrameMaker
- . This linking is achieved using a component of the Frame Development Kit called the
- +Frame Application Program Interface (API).
- If API applications or commands are installed for
- FrameMaker
- , they may be listed here.
- hTo get help on an API application, click an item in the list below.
- If the command you want help on
- ddoesn
- t appear below, use the
- Utilities >
- API Client Info
- command on the File menu.
- API Commands:
- New EDD
- Import EDD
- Export EDD
- Show Element Context
- Generate Structure
- Structure menu > New EDD
- KCommand that opens a new Element Definition document. Use this document to on
- Ncreate new element definitions that can be compiled into an Element Catalog.
- LWhen it opens, the Element Definition document is untitled. It contains one F
- Mhighest level element and a version number. The highest level element has an
- empty definition.

- structure
- Structure menu > Import EDD
- JDialog box where you can choose an Element Definition document and import
- Pits definitions into the current document. This procedure creates a new Element
- <Catalog in the document from which you chose this command.
- QIf you import the definitions into an existing document, FrameBuilder creates an
- KElement Catalog that replaces the current Catalog. Elements already in the tio
- Odocument are updated to match the definitions in the new catalog. Any elements com
- Iin the document that are not defined in the new catalog will be invalid.
- NYou can also import element definitions directly from one structured document
- Einto another, without using an Element Definition document. For more

- 6Specifies the name of the Element Definition document
- 7from which the new Element Catalog will be created. Be 3Cl
- 4sure to choose a valid Element Definition document.
- Structure menu > Export EDD
- JCommand that generates a new Element Definition document from the current
- LElement Catalog. The Element Definition document describes all the elements
- Jthat are in the Element Catalog of the document from which you chose this
- command.

- Structure menu > Show Element Context
- MCommand that displays information about the current element in an alert box.
- NThe alert box shows the format rule that is in effect, and the context of the
- current element.
- PThe format rule of an element specifies what format tag to apply to an element. ch
- RThe format rule can apply different tags to an element, depending on its location
- in relation to other elements.
- MThe context of an element is its ancestry. In other words, context shows the e
- Qcurrent element
- s parent, the parent of that parent, and so on up to the highest l
- level element in the flow.

- Structure
- > Generate Structure
- MDialog box where you choose a rule table for creating a structured flow from
- Junstructured text. The rule table is a special FrameBuilder document. For
- Minformation about creating rule tables, see
- Structure Rule Tables
- in Using
- FrameBuilder.
- NFrameBuilder uses the rule table to match elements to document objects. Every
- Qobject in your document that matches an element listed in the rule table will be
- wrapped in that element.
- ?Rule tables can match the following types of document objects: ds,
- MParagraph formats, character formats, tables, equations, variables, anchored s
- Fframes, footnotes, markers, cross-references, and imported graphics.
- 3Click here for more help on
- structure
- 4Specifies the name of the document to use as a rule em
- table.
- FrameMaker
- comes with five commands for API applications, which are listed
- Qbelow. If your version has other applications or commands linked to it, they may d
- Ualso be listed. It is up to the application developer to include help for them.
